CLASSROOM PENCIL BOXES: 3 IDEAS FOR CREATING CLASSROOM ORGANIZATION collier

Pencil boxes can be such a helper in organizing many parts of your classroom daily. In a bustling kindergarten classroom, organization and routine play crucial roles in creating a conducive learning environment.

I started this blog series for back-to-school organizational ideas last week with Classroom Mailboxes.

One simple tool that can significantly contribute to these aspects is the humble pencil box. These small containers, often overlooked, offer numerous benefits for young learners.

Let’s explore the value of using pencil boxes for kindergarten students and how they support organization, routine, and independence.

pencil boxes help with organization

Kindergarten is a time when children are introduced to various school supplies and begin developing organizational skills.

Pencil boxes provide a designated space for students to store their writing tools, erasers, crayons, and other essential items.

By encouraging them to keep their supplies in one place, pencil boxes help students develop a sense of responsibility and accountability.

When everything has its designated spot, students spend less time searching for materials, allowing them to focus on the task at hand.

By promoting organization, pencil boxes instill valuable habits that can carry over into other areas of their lives, fostering a sense of orderliness and efficiency.

pencil boxes promote routine

Routines are essential for young learners as they provide structure and stability.

Pencil boxes play a vital role in establishing classroom routines.

BUT you have to teach the routines…from the beginning.

How do we hold them? How do we carry them? How do we keep them organized?

I love tables instead of desks. This helps with collaboration and creating a team approach to learning.

At the beginning of each day, students can retrieve their pencil boxes from a designated area and return them before leaving.

This simple act sets the tone for the day and teaches children the importance of preparedness.

Furthermore, incorporating pencil box routines into classroom activities can help with routines. Students are asked to use the items in their pencil boxes as they are completing a task.

For example, when they are asked to get their pencils, spacers, and rubric reminder (Big 3), they materials are easily accessible.

Students are also taught to use the top of their pencil box as a “holding spot” for worksheet pieces. As they cut pieces apart for a worksheet or center lesson, they keep the pieces in their pencil box. This means they don’t confuse pieces with their neighbor or lose pieces on the floor.

Pencil boxes promote independence

As children progress through their kindergarten year, developing independence becomes a key objective.

Pencil boxes act as a tool to foster self-reliance and empower students to take charge of their learning.

By having their supplies readily available in their pencil boxes, children can take ownership of their materials and feel a sense of autonomy.

Students are also taught to be problem solvers with their pencil boxes.

If students find a stray crayon on the floor, they can independently add it to the LOST CRAYON bin in the crayon.

When students need a crayon, they automatically go to the LOST CRAYON bin and take the needed color and add it to their pencil boxes. They don’t need to draw attention away from a lesson or get other students or the teacher involved…they handle it! Independently.

This sense of ownership promotes a positive association with school supplies and encourages students to be responsible for their belongings.

A clutter-free learning environment can significantly impact a child’s ability to focus and engage in classroom activities.

Pencil boxes contribute to this by keeping desks and workspaces organized.

When students have easy access to their materials, they are less likely to become distracted or interrupt their classmates in search of supplies.

As educators, parents, and caregivers, let us recognize the significance of these seemingly mundane objects and encourage their use in kindergarten classrooms.

By harnessing the benefits of pencil boxes, we can lay a strong foundation for our young learners, equipping them with essential skills that will serve them well throughout their academic journey and beyond.
